Advocacy Teacher Training for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and Legal Aid Commission, Fiji
20 – 22 March 2015- At the joint invitation of Christopher Pryde - Director of Public Prosecutions and Sunil Sharma – Director of the Legal Aid Commission, 5 IATC Teacher Trainers from Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Africa went to Fiji in March 2015 to introduce advocacy teacher training and advocacy training for the very first time.
- Audrey Campbell-Moffat S.C., David Leung S.C., Jannie Van Der Merwe S.C., Ravindran Nekoo and Amrit Pal Singh taught on the inaugural Teacher Training Course for new Teachers from the Office of the DPP and the Legal Aid Commission.
- Both offices were completely new to the teaching Method but were enthusiastic and willing to take on board an incredible amount of information in a very short time; eager to introduce training of this type from their own resources.
- Our thanks go to the Office of the DPP who hosted the event and to Seini Paumau in particular who liaised at length with Ka at IATC HQ in Hong Kong. Thanks to her efforts, the materials were localized and the programme designed with Fijian law and procedure in mind.
- The IATC Teachers were honoured to have been invited to teach in Fiji. The highlight of the event was definitely the invitation to take part in the SevuSevu ceremony which involves drinking a liquid made from the roots of the yagona plant and which leaves the drinker with a certain sense of numbness. Despite its mud like consistency, it was humbling to be allowed to take part in this very special ritual welcome to foreign guests.
